Stress, Burnout, and Performance
Concern for Healthcare Providers
Just like an elite athlete, physicians and other healthcare providers are highly susceptible to the detrimental effects of prolonged stress. Unmanaged stress is associated with burnout, which is characterized by emotional and physical exhaustion, depersonalization, and a decreased sense of personal accomplishment. These effects can lead to sub-optimal care.
Just like elite athletes, providers need to develop tools for managing their stress, so they can optimize performance and personal well-being. As a physician you give so much of yourself to provide quality care, often at the expense of your own personal health. You too need to engage in self-care, restoring yourself, so that you can perform at an elite level. Once restored you can regain your original sense of purpose and meaning that brought you to the profession. I would like to be a resource that helps you achieve that.
